Image by ACWA Power. Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power (TADAWUL:2082) said on Thursday it will lead and develop a 1-GW wind energy and battery storage project in Kazakhstan under an agreement with the country’s energy ministry and its sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna.
TotalEnergies will develop the project in partnership with the Kazakhstani wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna and national company KazMunayGas. Each Kazakh partner will hold a 20% stake in the project.
ACWA Power said the project marks its entry into Kazakhstan with an initial investment of USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.4bn). Samruk-Kazyna explained the project is included in the second package of the fund’s priority projects. It is expected to be located in the area of the Dzungarian gates of the Zhetysu region and to be completed in 2027.
The agreement was signed by H.E. Almassadam Satkaliyev, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna; Basil Yernat Duisenbekuly, Deputy Governor of the Zhetysu region; and Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power.
Each Kazakh partner will hold a 20% stake in the project. “The signing of this Agreement on Investment will allow to launch the Mirny project, which will help TotalEnergies triple its power generation from 33 TWh to more than 100 TWh by 2030,” said TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne.
