Prices for Chinese solar modules have reached record lows, according to the latest data from OPIS. The benchmark assessment for TOPCon modules from China has fallen to $0.100 per watt, a decline of $0.005 per watt compared to the previous week. Similarly, Mono PERC module prices have also dropped by $0.005 per watt, now standing at $0.090 per
Solar power purchase agreement (PPA) prices on average rose 15% year over year to $52.69/MWh in the final quarter of 2023, while wind PPA prices surged roughly 23% to $60.11/MWh, according to LevelTen Energy Inc. data released in a Jan. 30 report. The prices are based on the lowest 25% of offers on the company''s PPA market platform, which reflects

Oversupply pushed prices of finished solar panels in China down 42% in 2023, making Chinese panels more than 60% cheaper than US-made equipment, with some module-only manufacturers taking orders at negative margins to preserve market share, Wood Mackenzie analyst Huaiyan Sun said.
The domestic prices of China mono-grade polysilicon gained 1.89% week-to-week at CNY33.625 ($4.74)/kg while mono PERC M10 wafer rose 2.13% at CNY0.144/piece over the same period. Amid intense competition amongst module sellers and pressure to clear inventories, module prices would continue to weaken towards the end of the year, the source

While solar module prices have plummeted, there are concerns that they may have reached unsustainable levels. The consistent supply of fuel enables coal power plants to operate 24/7, whereas photovoltaics and wind facilities depend on variable weather conditions. Despite these challenges, China has shown a commitment to transitioning towards cleaner

Pent-up demand from what one source calls “all-time high” procurement, with China’s National Energy Administration approving a third batch of Gigawatt-base power projects, means falling prices could find a floor. According to the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, the country is set to install up to 120 GW of solar power in 2023.
“If these are all true, it will send a positive signal to the solar PV industry, as such policies will suppress the continued decline of solar PV prices,” said Lin Boqiang, dean of Xiamen University’s China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy.
Province-level solar PV supply curves in China were constructed. PV technical potential was estimated around 39.6 PWh to 442 PWh. The uncertainty of PV technical potential was quantified. The cost of PV ranges from 0.12 CNY/kWh to 7.93 CNY/kWh. China's PV economic potential far exceeds its projected electricity demand.
The findings of our study indicate that China has a significant potential for PV farms, with a total installed potential of 22.5 TW in the pessimistic scenario and 241 TW in the optimistic scenario. The comparisons with other studies are similar to those found in PV technical potential.
According to our results, approximately 78.6 % and 99.9 % of China's technical solar PV potential are priced lower than the benchmark price of coal-fired energy in pessimistic and optimistic scenario.
The installed solar PV capacity in China increasing from 130.25 GW in 2017 to 392.61 GW in 2022 (IRENA, 2023). Moreover, at the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit, China further announced that the total installed capacity of wind and solar power will reach over 1200 GW by 2030 (The United Nations et al., 2020).
