[Photo/Xinhua] Rooftop solar PV installations in China may surge in the next three years as the country goes through a green energy transition and plans to make renewable energy a key cornerstone in the country''s path to a greener economy, a recent research report said.
The country is one of the sunniest places on earth, making it an ideal candidate for massive, commercial adoption of solar power. After the early days of exponential growth, fueled in large part by government subsidies, the industry has transitioned from a period of production overcapacity into relative maturity. But as the country phased out subsidies, leaving
Among all renewable energy sources in China, photovoltaic is growing the fastest. Between 2012 and 2021, the average annual growth rates of photovoltaic, hydro, wind and biomass power generation were 11.5%, 10.2%, 3.5%, 3.3%, respectively.
To achieve the national target that renewable power would meet half of the total electricity demand by 2030 in China, solar energy is attached with strategic importance and is expected to produce 20%-25% of the total electricity by 2050 [1], which is generally consistent with the long-term national climate target of reaching net-zero emission before 2060 [2].

Both housing developers and underserved communities alike can benefit from increasing public funding opportunities for solar. As interest in projects that address environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects of investment continues to grow, integrating renewable energy in affordable housing projects can provide significant sustainability benefits

PV Tech has been running PV ModuleTech Conferences since 2017. PV ModuleTech USA, on 17-18 June 2025, will be our fourth PV ModulelTech conference dedicated to the U.S. utility scale solar sector.
China installed 25.56GW of new solar installations in the first nine months of 2021, with distributed installations accounting for nearly two-thirds (64.2%) of installs in the year to date
This paper examines inequality in household adoption of rooftop solar photovoltaics in rural China through a qualitative study of three villages. The Chinese government promotes distributed solar to drive low-carbon development. However, community management and China’s institutional system influence unequal access.
Moreover, the integration of HSPV and heat pump has become a promising clean heating option for rural residential buildings in northern China, in which the lack of strong power grid and extended gas pipelines makes it difficult to rely solely on natural gas or electric heating.
Based on the developed mathematical model, this paper assesses the solar irradiation resources and BIPV potential of residential buildings in different climate zones of China. It is found that roofs are the first choice for BIPV installation, followed by south façades, especially in high-latitude cities, and then east and west facades.
Rooftop solar PV installations in China may surge in the next three years as the country goes through a green energy transition and plans to make renewable energy a key cornerstone in the country's path to a greener economy, a recent research report said.
China’s rural residential photovoltaic system has been greatly developed in recent years. However, most existing researches, are difficult to reflect the real development situation of the whole system.
China, being the largest developing country and the largest PV utilization country, has been actively pursuing the adoption of PV technology to meet its growing energy demands while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the vigorous development of PV projects requires substantial land resources, which are relatively scarce.
